All About Julia, the First Muppet with Autism

Julia teaches about misunderstandings

On screen, Julia’s character is a fun, sweet girl who loves singing. However, she doesn’t always behave as expected. The show does a great job emulating real-life situations in which people with autism may be misunderstood. For example, when all the other Muppets introduce themselves on the show, Julia doesn’t participate. It’s common for people with autism not to understand what’s expected of them without clear, direct instructions. In Julia’s case, she didn’t catch on that if everyone else is introducing themselves, she should too.
