Optometrist Questions Colored contacts

Are colored lenses bad for the eyes?

I have been thinking of getting colored lenses for my eyes. But are they bad for my eyes in the long run?

Modern properly fit colored contact lenses are just as healthy as any other contact lens for your eyes. You should always follow your doctor's directions for wearing time, care and cleaning of whatever contacts you are prescribed for best eye health long term.
Colored lenses sold online or in stores without a prescription may be bad for your eyes- their origin, sanitization process, contents, and sizing are often unknown. It's not legal to sell contact lenses without a prescription in the US for the protection of consumers. Prescription lenses with color still "breathe" less than clear lenses and are less comfortable if the paint is sprayed on the front surface. My preferred are Air Optix Colors because they allow the highest oxygen transmission to the eye and sandwich the pigmented layer in the middle of the lens- for a smooth, comfortable surface. I hope this helps!
As long as you follow proper protocol and hygiene and don't overwear they are fine.
Contact lenses are not bad for your eyes including colored contact lenses. As long as they are not abused, for example not worn too long during the day, not used more than a month if they are monthly lenses and properly stored and cleaned using only a multipurpose contact lens solution. You want to make sure you visit your eye care provider for proper fitting and to discuss your options for best wear schedule (daily or monthly) and to make sure your prescription will allow for an option of colored contact lens. Remember all contact lenses are considered to be a medical devise that comes in direct contact with your eye, thus it is very important to have your contacts and your eye health properly evaluated annually. Good luck!
Only if you do not wear them properly, according to the instructions of your eye doctor,
Not at all as long as they are fitted accordingly by an eye doctor so that the right base curve & diameter can be determined.
No, they are not when properly fit and evaluated to work well for you and your prescription if there is a prescription. Proper care and management of contacts wear will assure proper eye health.
Not if they were prescribed by an optometrist who knows how your are wearing them. They do make breathable ones now. Don’t buy them online.
As long as they are properly fitted and monitored by your eye doctor, many color lenses can be perfectly fine for your eyes. A doctor will make sure the lenses fit and transmit the correct amount of oxygen to your cornea. This is different for each patient.
No
The most important item to remember when wearing contact lenses is to follow your doctors wear schedule and handling instructions and to visit your eye doctor each year. Visit whenever you are having any type of irritation, discharge, redness and vision loss.
No they are not. You should be very wary of wearing them at night. They should be fit to your eye by a licensed dispenser. All of the normal warnings about over wearing, sanitation, etc. apply. They do not allow as much oxygen to the eye as some of the more modern lenses so be careful as you should be with any lens.

No, but I would not wear them every day and I would never recommend sleeping in them.
With any lens, if comfort or clarity drops in the lenses, they should be thrown out even if they haven’t met their FDA approved wearing longevity.
Any form of contact lenses is bad for your eyes in the long run, but for a short time or once in a while, usage is OK. Meanwhile, I have to mention that clean handling and good care is very important to keep your eyes healthy.
They dint cause enough oxygen transport to the cornea .
