I have insomnia and want to take medications. Are sleep medications safe?

Most sleep medications are safe but all have the potential to cause side effects
All medications have potential side effects. If you are thinking about getting a prescription sleep medication, and you take other prescription medications, certain over the counter medications, or herbal remedies, you should speak with your Doctor or Pharmacist about any possible interactions. Melatonin is a natural supplement that helps most people sleep and there are teas (Sleepy Time Tea) that also help people fall asleep. To aid in better sleep, you should avoid watching television in bed and the use of electronic devices at least one hour before going to sleep and lights should be completed off. There also some great relaxation and/or meditation apps that have been helpful for people with sleep disorders. If you are waking up several times during the time you are sleeping, you can speak with your Doctor about having a sleep study to make sure your insomnia is not related to sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea, there are effective treatments that help aid in better breathing while you sleep. Wishing you the best and lots of rest in your future.
