Can I drink coffee after heart bypass surgery?

I will have heart bypass surgery. Can I drink coffee after heart bypass surgery?

1 Answer

Despite strong opinions on the issue, there is no definitive randomized trial to guide recommendations. Most studies are based on patient reported intake. Low to moderate coffee consumption (1-3 cups) may protect against heart attacks. Heavy coffee intake may trigger coronary or arrhythmic events in susceptible individuals. Post CABG patients are at higher risk for arrhythmias. Most surgeons recommend restricting caffeine intake for 4-6 wks post op.
