“Can acupuncture cause miscarriage in early pregnancy?”
I am a 29 year old female. I want to know if acupuncture can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy?

It is important to let your practitioner know that you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant when you come in for a session.

Theoretically it is possible. My mentor/teacher I apprenticed with told me that it can only do this if the pregnancy is already troubled and weak.
As long as you are in constant communication with your acupuncturist and let them know you are indeed pregnant, we avoid points that are said to help "induce", or aid in an easier labor. Therefore there is very small to no chance of causing a miscarriage through acupuncture.
It is highly unlikely that Acupuncture would cause miscarriage in early pregnancy. There are specific contraindicated points during pregnancy which all acupuncturists are trained not to use at any time during pregnancy, except or until labor induction/cervical ripening is indicated, and even then only with direct patient consent. The likelihood of these points to actually cause miscarriage is very low, however.
Acupuncture can be done very safely at any point during pregnancy and can help with many pregnancy related aches, pains and concerns.

Not likely. Acupuncture is a safe treatment option during pregnancy. Very often used to control morning sickness in early pregnancy without any side effects. Good Luck

Any licensed acupuncturist should know the few points that are contraindicated during pregnancy. So, I would say it’s extremely unlikely that acupuncture was the cause of any miscarriage.

Only if done incorrectly, there are specific points we use to help women go into labor when needed. So those points are specifically avoided when a women is not coming for that specifically. As long as your acupuncturist knows you are pregnant it is completely safe . I treat many pregnant women
It depends how your practitioner can do if or when you are pregnant. He or she should take some precautions to avoid a miscarriage!
Generally speaking, no. For acupuncture to cause a miscarriage in early pregnancy the needling technique would have to be so intense it's borderline traumatizing. That being said, there are points that we want to avoid as a precaution. If you are pregnant, you must notify your practitioner prior to starting your treatment.
We are carefully trained to treat during pregnancy, so I wouldn't worry at all about the acupuncture causing a miscarriage. If you have a history of miscarriage, the acupuncture can help you prevent them.
The theoretical answer to your question is maybe. The classics of Chinese medicine lay out a set of points that are not to be used at any stage during a pregnancy. These points are thought to be too stimulating or too strongly 'descending' and are also thought to stimulate uterine contraction. There have been a few modern studies of these points in a pregnancy context and, so far, the 'science' does not support the classical Chinese position. My own position is to give the classics their due. After all, almost everything else they mention works in a clinical context. A board certified and state licensed acupuncturist will be well aware of which points to avoid. Any other provider offering 'acupuncture-like' services under the scope of some other license may not.
