OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OB-GYN

Do I have pinworms?

I’ve been experiencing anal itching since May 2021. I performed a stool sample twice, one in June 2021 and July 2021. Both results were negative but I’m still experiencing itching. In July I started to notice greenish vaginal discharge which I sought care in an urgent clinic. All my test results came back negative for STDs, yeast, and bacterial vaginosis. But the doctor prescribed me oral Metronidazole for 10days without telling me I was negative for BV on the test. Since the end of my treatment, I’m still experiencing vaginal discharge and anal itching. In my stool, I am finding long strands that look like this. Could I have had undiagnosed pinworms that have migrated to my vagina? That is causing the discharge.

Thank you for your question.

It is clear from the onset of your narration that this is a pin worm infection till proven otherwise. It is likely overgrowth, and colonization could spill into other urogenital areas such as the vagina. Good news is treatment is available. Contact a gynecologist or infectious disease specialist to provide appropriate treatment.
Hope this was helpful.
You could have a pin worm infection, usually rectal, not vaginal. Pinworms can usually be treated completely with two doses of over-the-counter medicine called pyrantel pamoate, available in the United States under the brand names Pin-X and Reese's Pinworm Medicine. Take one dose immediately and another dose two weeks later.
Take care!
