Great question! Veneers shouldnt affect gums. I place the edges of all of my veneers at the gum line so that it is easily cleansible with a toothbrush. Where people run into problems is when veneers are placed BELOW the gumline, which are much harder to clean.
It depends on the contours of the veneers. If they are properly contoured for the area the gums will not be affected.
Veneers will affect your gums in the same way that dental crowns may affect your gums. You must keep the area clean at the junction of the veneer and the gums. Plaque and food may tend to stick in this area causing gum irritation and you will be prone to cavities in this area as well. Sometimes some of the gum tissue may be removed in order to improve the looks of the veneers. This is called a gingivectomy or gingivoplasty.
If done well the veneers do not affect the gums. The gingiva must be
healthy to ensure the veneers last 15+ years
Like any procedure it is technique sensitive. Choosing the right doctor is
key and also post op hygiene is crucial.
