some types of epilepsy can be cured, others can be controlled.
Epilepsy can be caused by many different problems, and at least 1/3 of the time we don’t find a cause. Epilepsy is a symptom of a brain disorder of some type. Some times the abnormal part of the brain can be operatively removed. Even then the seizures may continue, because the surgery itself can cause seizures. Surgery, if it is possible, is the only “cure” for epilepsy, and only a small fraction of patients are appropriate for surgery. A much larger number have their seizures stop on their own. Good control with medication for years makes this more likely. So, the “cure” in many people is good seizure control.
Cure is a variable term. One definition of cure is for a patient to be on medication with no side effects and no seizures, which is possible. Also, if the cause is found, it may be able to isolate the abnormal brain tissue and remove it by surgery, which some claim is a cure, although people still need to take medication after surgery. In about 60% of cases, the cause for epilepsy cannot be found.
