Eye burning and sensitive to light?

At about 5 pm this evening I went to put my contacts in and my hands weren't very clean. All I had with me was some 70% rubbing alcohol and I put a little bit on my hand and then wiped them dry and then put my contacts him and just shortly after my eyes started to burn. Then when I went outside the sun made it worse. So, I took the contacts out abs out some eye drops in and about 20 mins ago I took a shot glass with water and flushed my eyes out really good. I did just Google it and I should have done it for 20 mins but I want a professional opinion instead.

The alcohol probably caused a corneal abrasion. If you’re not feeling better in the morning, you probably should see an eye specialist so that they can treat the abrasion with medicated drops or ointment.

It’s quite possible that the alcohol may have absorbed into the contacts. Rinsing your eye out is important. Get some artificial tears to put in your eyes. Does your eyes still hurt? Or feel light sensitive to the sun? I probably would recommend going to see an eye doctor to make sure there wasn’t any damage done to the surface of your eyes.
Indeed you have to rinse your hands with fresh water after every alcohol rubbing to prevent this event. When you rub with alcohol, the alcohol volatilizes apparently but actually still sticks in your fingers. So be aware. For contact lens wearers, in general, it’s always advisable to have 1 to 2 Unidos (s) of physiological serum in his/her own bag to rinse the eyes in case of irritation.
Please go see an ophthalmologist immediately.

Hi, it definitely sounds like your eyes should be evaluated. The hand sanitizer may have affected the top layer of your eye. You may need medicated eye drops to help your eye heal. I'm happy to take a look today. If you'd like to come in please call the office at 972-403-1110.
