What this test result means is that in the past you have been exposed to Herpes Type 1 which is the virus that causes cold sores. Your body responded by making antibodies (IgG) to this virus in case it comes around again in the future. If you have a history of cold sores then that’s easy to grasp. If you have never had a cold sore, they know you have been exposed to this virus in the past.
That would mean you are positive for HSV type 1.
Hello and thanks for reaching out!

Yes, that means you tested positive; however, it doesn’t say when you first became positive. IgG is an antibody that shows up in your blood when something is an old condition. I typically do not use blood tests for HSV because it gives the wrong impression related to STI testing. If you had a lesion, that could be cultured and if positive, it would mean you had a current outbreak of HSV. HSV 1 can show up like a cold sore or a painful ulcer on the genital area, most commonly. I’ve seen them other areas, but it’s rare.

As always, for more individualized care and answers, you should always speak with your provider.

Hope all goes well!
