Pain, Bruising edema are all sign we utilize to evaluate ankle injuries. We also palpate where the painful areas are located. Radiographs are recommended and I also utilize Diagnostic Ultrasound with my exam which will show extent of Soft tissue damage.
To obtain a precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan, we recommend scheduling a comprehensive consultation with our experienced podiatrist at Jose Loor Podiatry Practice. Our team is dedicated to providing thorough evaluations, utilizing diagnostic tools, and offering personalized care to address your specific ankle injury.

If you had pain , redness and swelling then it’s serious
YOU NEED TO VISIT A PODIATRIST. HE/SHE ARE THE ONES THAT CAN ANSWER THAT AFTER EXAMINING YOU FOOT!!! HOWEVER, PAY ATTENTION IF IT IS VERY PAINFUL AND WITH BRUISES. BUT FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS IMOBILIZED YOU ANKLE.
Pain with weightbearing, continued swelling, and/or bruising could mean you have a more serious ankle injury than just a sprained ankle. I would recommend following up with your local podiatrist or orthopedic physician.
If you have pain when you walk, and it has been a while since the injury, you can find out if there is something more serious going on by having imaging studies, such as x-ray, CT, MRI imaging.
Ankle injuries though common can span the spectrum of a minor sprain to a severe fracture requiring surgery. So the question really is when do go and have it evaluated by a professional. Concerning symptoms are pain that persisted at rest for more than a week, pain when standing on the ankle, persistent pain, swelling and bruising of the ankle. Ankles that are not cared for properly and in a timely fashion can come back to haunt for years to come. Also, ankles that may only be strained, after healing benefit from physical therapy rehab to protect from re-injury.
I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for diagnosis and treatment options.
Only way to know is with an exam with a doctor. Then xray and or mri.
