Use a water pick to flush out all of the food debris prior to brushing and an electric toothbrush! Brush over the brackets and wires! Use disclosing agents- vegetable dye to show you where the plaque is left after brushing.
There is a special kind of Brush you can use for braces, also the waterpick and mouth wash (Clorohexydin 0.12% ) only by prescription.
There several ways to approach teeth brushing with braces on. (1) use the long end of the bristles, place it at about 45 degree angle towards your gum line, and brush horizontally with short strokes and in a semi-circular motion. Repeat this brushing technique for all other area, where the orthodontic brackets are presence, (2) For the interproximal area ( which is the area in between the teeth), you may go to a local grocery, or pharmacy stores. Look for a Proxybrush—it looks like a baby milk bottle brush, or a Christmas tree, except that it is a very tiny little version. This Proxybrush helps to brush your teeth behind the wires and between teeth teeth. (3) There is a specific Orthodontic toothbrush on the market. The bristles is “V” trimmed, allowing somewhat easier to brush. The price ranges differently. One may find it online and from Amazon.com. (4) Last, but not least, whatever techniques you prefer to use, please do not forget to floss your teeth regularly. A floss threader will definitely helps you to make the floss go through the interproximal area much more easier.
As any study shows an electric tooth brush that lets you knw if you are brushing too hard will do a better job than a manual toothbrush. Electric or manual, braces or not you should start with flossing first. With braces that means using a floss threader which takes more time. Straight teeth are nice but if they have a bunch of holes in them then it was not a good trade. Brushing is pretty similar with braces. You need to pay a little more attention on getting debride off from around the brackets, especially where they are bonded to the teeth. So angle the tooth brush up from under the brackets then go back and angle from top down onto junction of bracket and tooth. this should do a good job for you. Then as always make sure you cleaned along the gum line front and back of all teeth. Don not forget the top where teeth chew. Finish with the roof the mouth and tongue as far back as you can get for healthier tissues and fresher breath.
Same as you did before. Ask your orthodontist next time you are in
The same way that you do with braces off.
