That is a formulation of metformin. It helps by effects on liver and satiety. It is safe long-term if one has good kidney function.
Hello,

Glycomet is a combination of two medications; glyburide and metformin. This medication won't help you to loose weight. Glyburide is a very old medication and as a side effect causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which in turn increases appetite. I would say I see more weight gain than weight neutral with glyburide. Metformin may help loose some weight (no more than 5 lbs) if taken without the glyburide. We have better options for diabetes and weight loss. Discuss with your physician using GLP1 analogs such as Victoza, Ozempic, Tresiba.
Glycomet SR is a slow release form of metformin , a chemical used as medication that targets metabolic activity in the liver. The liver is responsible for processing nutrients absorbed from the intestine and producing fat and protein. It also stores glucose for future release to meet short-term energy requirements. The liver's pivotal role in energy balance in the body can be destabilized by hormonal deficiencies among other factors. It's cells can also become insensitive to hormonal messages. Metformin has the ability to restore the sensitivity of liver cells to hormonal messages and improve their function. This impacts energy balance in the body normalizing glucose levels and lipid levels among other benefits. When nutrients are used efficiently in energy production rather than being stored inappropriately, weight loss is realized.
Sorry, metformin helps weight loss of only 3 pounds and it isn’t known why a patient eats a little less.
This is a prescription medication for treatment of diabetes and, if anything, it can cause weight gain. It should strictly be used in people with diabetes and under the supervision of a skilled physician. So, the answer to her question is no.
Glycomet SR is just long acting metformin. Metformin is not really a wt. loss drug. It may help a little by some actions on the GI tract and its flora. Metformin also leaves a slight metallic taste in the mouth that often decreases desire to eat. This designed to lower blood sugar & not for wt. loss. If you want or need to take metformin or metformin or its long acting form you can get the cheaper as a generic drug rather than as a brand name drug & the generic is as good.
