Most anesthesia drugs work on the NMDA receptors for anesthesia.
This is a very broad question because there are many different elements that contribute to “anesthesia,” but what I believe you’re inquiring about is the hypnotic part of anesthesia. Most of the hypnotics used to achieve unconsciousness work on GABA receptors, which are receptors mediated by chloride ion channels in the brain.
Anesthesia interferes with the ability of nerves to transmit signals, like pain or consciousness.
Anesthesia interrupts pain signals in the brain and body and prevents the brain from remembering what happened during surgery!
