Ear ringing could be chronic or temporary depending on the cause. If it is associated with dizziness or hearing loss, see your PCP.

It depends on the cause. If you've had trauma to your ears from dangerous noise level, ringing can be temporary (i.e., up to 48 hours) or if permanent damage was done, it may not go away. In many cases, however, trauma from noise exposure causes temporary tinnitus (ringing), which resolves within 48 hours once ears have healed themselves. If it lasts longer, it is recommended to have your hearing checked.
If the tinnitus is cochlear or central (brain) generated, it may be permanent. If due to TMJ, neck issues, teeth grinding, etc., it may resolve with appropriate treatment. Aggravators of tinnitus include smoking, alcohol, red wine, noise exposure, migraines, "thinking about it". Hearing aids have been effective in improving symptoms. See it ENT for more information. If you have not had an audiogram, you will need to arrange for one to be done.
