As I tell every patient once a scar, always a scar. The average scar builds up and thickens in the first three months to protect you from the outside environment and takes 12 additional months to break down to a fine white line.
Typical scars on the face go through a few phases. Initially, they are red and bumpy. this can last about 1-2 months. After that, they are a bit firm but less red and not as bumpy. After about 3 months the scars mature and have their final appearance. There are certain treatments you can do to improve the appearance of the scar. Silicone sheets can help with the redness and bumpiness of the scar while lasers such as IPL and PDL can improve the final appearance.
All scars mature over the first 1-1.5 year. Eating a healthy diet, getting adequate protein, sleep, and following your physician's postoperative instructions are vital in the first few weeks of healing. After the sutures are removed, I recommend silicone based products and sunscreen to all of my patients to optimize wound healing.
