Hi! There is a general guideline among plastic surgeons in the U.S. that a maximum of 5L of fat is removed during liposuction at a time. There are some cases where more fat can be removed with safety although this typically warrants overnight stay.
Liposuction limits vary state to state. 3-4 liters of lipoaspirate is considered safe is the outpatient setting. Removing more than that can lead to unsafe volume shifts that can take an otherwise very safe procedure and increase the risk of a life-threatening complication.
Hello. It depends on where you live, your age, your health and your body mass index. In Los Angeles, we are not allowed to aspirate or suction out more than five and a half liters.
By state regulations, in Florida, we can remove up to 4000 cc in an outpatient setting. Larger volumes will require additional stages.
Let's start from the end: liposuction is not a way for losing weight. It is meant for areas that are harder to target when you achieve your ideal weight loss target (judged by your body mass index or BMI). The common areas that liposuction is applied to are the area under the chin, the sides of the breast, the lower abdomen, love handles, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, and around the knees. Taking out very large amounts of fat in certain areas may cause wrinkling or sagging of the skin with gravity. Always consider liposuction for contouring rather than thinking about maximizing the amount!
Basically, it as much to achieve the goal. Now, not everyone presents healthy enough to pursue this. So, it may require more than one procedure. The attending doctor should have the experience to decide this.
Liposuction is not for weight loss, at the most, we can remove 5 liters of fat, which is only 10 or so pounds.
