“How often should I get a cleaning for my teeth?”
How often should I get cleanings? I go, close to, every 5 months now.

The answer to this varies from person to person. For the average person every 6 months is appropriate. If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or buildup up calculus easily, 3-4 month recalls may be recommended.
The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist at least once a year to get a routine examination and cleaning. But I would recommend twice a year. Many dental insurance policies will cover two cleanings per year, but few people take full advantage of their benefits.
Frequency of tooth cleanings varies with each patient. I have some patients who visit my office once a year while others are four times a year for cleanings. Those who come once yearly run the risk of their metabolism changing with age which will happen to us all at one age or another. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing exactly when your metabolism will change; so to be safe most people should honor the twice a year standard.
The American Dental Association recommends twice per year for examination, x-rays for patients who are cavity prone in adolescence, followed up by any additional instructions your dentist may give you based on your particular examination.
The average person should have their teeth cleaned 2 times a year or every 6 months. Some patients accumulate tartar at a higher rate and should get them cleaned more often. Patients with periodontal disease need to get them cleaned every 3-4 months. Your dentist and his hygienist can come up with a personalized schedule that works for your oral health.
Depending on the health of your gums and if there is existing periodontal disease or a history of periodontal disease, the normal recommended period of time for cleanings is about every 6 months. In the case of periodontal disease, we recommend doing a cleaning every 3-4 months as instructed by your hygienist and dentist.
