Is general anesthesia used for colonoscopy?

I will have a colonoscopy. Is general anesthesia used for a colonoscopy?

They will give you medication that will make you sleep and you'll wake up by the time the procedure is done.


No. Usually only light sedation.

Rarely. Most likely you will receive propofol in the IV and a mask/nasal prongs for oxygen. Few patients remember the procedure, most wake up feeling very good.
Very rare, monitoring anesthesia care(MAC) is the common type of anesthesia.
