Is prostatectomy done under general anesthesia?

I will have a prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Is prostatectomy done under general anesthesia?

It depends on whether it is an open prostatectomy or laparoscopic (DaVinci - robotic ) prostatectomy. Open prostatectomy can be done with epidural or spinal anesthesia. Laparoscopic prostatectomy can only be done with general anesthesia because the abdomen is insufflated with co2 gas. That affects the ventilation so the patient will have to be ventilated to avoid respiratory acidosis and consequently cardiac arrest.
