Pharmaceutical Medicine Questions Pharmacist

Is this pill ok to take?

I was having hair loss. My sister had the same thing and her blood test showed a thyroid problem. She started taking Armour 30 mg and her hair loss stopped. I recently had a blood test and my thyroid was fine. The doctor said she didn't know why I was having hair loss but I could take the Armour pill and see if it would help my hair loss. She said it wouldn't hurt taking the pill even though my thyroid was fine. My sister said her doctor said when you start taking a thyroid pill you have to take it for the rest of your life. I am worried if I should not have started taking the pill. If the pills didn't help my hair loss I wanted to stop them. I have only taken them for 5 days. My question: Are they hurting me since my thyroid is fine, and can I stop them if they don't stop the hair loss? Thank you.

Armour thyroid contains the active thyroid hormone T3 and can cause rapid heart beat, hair loss, tremors and anxiety. So depending on the age of the person and their condition (underactive, normal, or overactive), taking additional thyroid medicine can cause more complications and can push people into atrial fibrillation. So, it is not recommended, and is ill advised to take Armour thyroid unless medically indicated. See your doctor for proper evaluation, you may already have an overactive thyroid.
