Behavioral activation is a therapeutic approach that focuses on helping individuals engage in positive, meaningful activities to break the cycle of depression. By identifying and increasing behaviors that bring a sense of accomplishment or pleasure, it aims to reduce negative emotions and improve overall mood. This can also reduce some of the feelings of loneliness, isolation and social withdrawal that so often accompanies and worsens the state of depression.
Generally speaking some of the best ways to behavioral activate are the following;
Engaging in regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce symptoms of depression. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, and can improve overall mental health. Activities like walking, running, yoga, or swimming can help reduce stress and increase energy levels. Socializing with friends or participating in group activities can also combat feelings of isolation, as human connection plays a crucial role in emotional well-being. Creative pursuits such as journaling, painting, or playing music allow for self-expression and provide a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, practicing mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation techniques can help shift negative thought patterns and improve emotional resilience. Consistent sleep, a balanced diet, and exposure to nature are also key factors in supporting mental health and managing depression. If your severity of depression inhibits you from engaging in the above examples or similar ones in your life, or despite this your depression is not improving, or is worsening contacting a health care provider/psychiatrist/therapist is recommended. As always if you are feeling suicidal call 911/988 or immediately go to the nearest emergency department.
Activities that promote movement and social interactions can be helpful. Although it may feel exhausting and/or daunting, the more one pushes themselves to engage with their environment the better they can start to feel, Activities should be related to personal interests that foster a sense of achievement or personal satisfaction.
Social activities and being around your support system, doing activities that bring you joy and pleasure, self care activities, and making sure you are generally taking care of yourself (showering, getting up and dressed in the morning, brushing teeth, exercising, eating healthy, etc.)
Both exercise and social involvement are helpful. I would also recommend cognitive-behavior therapy with a psychologist.
Depression leads to inactivity, typically. Trying to activate yourself, even when you don't feel like it, can help in fighting back against the depression, and lead to more hopeful feelings. Activities can also distract a depressed person and get them away from moody ruminations that reinforce the depression. Activities do not need to be especially strenuous or time-consuming. Light exercise, especially with a friend or family member, is almost always a good move. When doing it, resist the tendency to reflect on how out of shape you are now compared to how you used to be, etc. That is the depression trying to talk you out of doing something good for yourself. Just concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other, looking around, feeling your breaths.
