After radioactive iodine treatment, the thyroid gland's tissue is destroyed, leading to a reduction in thyroid function and potentially causing hypothyroidism. Regular monitoring and medication adjustment may be required. To learn more, connect with me at drjeromepuryear.com. Thank you!
The thyroid tissue purposely gets damaged, then you will develop hypothyroidism.
When radioactive I-131 is given to a patient, a majority winds up in the thyroid. For cancer patients, the thyroid is stimulated first. The radiopharmaceutical is a beta emitter which will destroy tissue within the vicinity of the emission. The gland then becomes fibrosed and function is diminished. For cancer patients, the goal is to destroy the whole gland.
