I will have a colectomy. What type of anesthesia is used for colectomy?

A colectomy requires general anesthesia with a breathing tube (totally asleep throughout the case). This is because this is a major abdominal surgery that necessitates precise surgical acumen and no room for movement at all (esp. if it is a laparoscopic surgery [ie video in your belly] with sharp tools inside your abdomen. Your anesthesiologist may also offer you a thoracic epidural which can be placed before the surgery and provides excellent opioid-sparing, post operative pain relief. Hope this helps.
