I would recommend doing very light activity for several weeks. After you see your doctor, and have the OK, you can begin exercising. You should be able to resume most activities within 4 to 6 weeks.
For uncomplicated hernia surgery anticipate 4 to 6 weeks of limited activity - no contact sports or lifting anything >10 lbs.
It is usually best to avoid any heavy lifting over 15-20lbs or strenuous activity for 4 weeks. Aerobic exercise and light weight lifting while in a seated position are OK at 2 weeks after surgery. Full weight lifting can be resumed at 4 weeks, but should be gradually increased as tolerated. No dedicated core exercises for 6 weeks.
It depends on the type of hernia and the type of repair performed. In my patients some inguinal hernias can return to full activity as soon as 2 weeks while other ventral hernias are 6 weeks before full activity. I recommend speaking your surgeon to determine the approach and their recommendations for the best recovery in your individual case.
It depends on the extent of the Surgery, but start walking immediately after Surgery.
