Speech Pathologists Questions Slurred speech

Can a speech pathologist help me with slurred words?

Sometimes I slur my words when I'm trying to convey something important. I think it's a nervous quirk, and I'm not really sure how to help it. Can a speech pathologist do this for me?

Hi! Thanks for reaching out to me with your question. A Speech Therapist can provide you with compensatory strategies to help you improve your speech clarity in times of stress. If you're interested in learning more, reach out to a local therapist who specializes in treating your age group (adults vs pediatrics). If you happen to live in the states of NJ or NC, I'm licensed to provide therapy in both of those areas and can assist you more. Possibly a speech language pathologist may be helpful. I would do a consultation/evaluation to see if it can treated.
Yes, but it is always good to notify your physician to rule out medication side affects or other neurological conditions.
Yes the speech pathologists can help you. It sounds like a disorder called cluttering. However, the slurring could be due to many reasons. A careful evaluation is needed before treatment can be provided.

In short, yes, a speech pathologist can help with moments of disfluencies such as calming and breathing techniques. There is a lot that can go into disfluency, so a full evaluation is recommended.
They could if you can find one in your area open to targeting this with you. Another suggestion may be to seek out help from a public speaking professional/ teacher.

Hi,

Yes a speech pathologist can assist with strategies. Most strategies for this include slowing your rate of speech and building your confidence levels while communicating. Seek out a speech evaluation to get more specific feedback!
Good luck.
