Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Tooth Abscess

Can a tooth abscess require extraction?

I have a tooth abscess that's swollen above the gum, and now I'm worried that I'm going to have to get it removed. Do abscesses require surgery?

ABSOLUTELY YES
Not all tooth abscesses need to be removed. If the tooth is in still good condition, i.e., no gross cavity, no severe bone loss, no other pathological problem, then it can be saved with a root canal. Your endodontist or periodontist or oral surgeon can help you to diagnosis if the tooth can be restored even it has an abscess.
