Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Specialist Questions Breathing distress

My son was born with a breathing disorder. What are the chances his condition will improve as he grows up?

My son was born with breathing distress and was admitted in the NICU as soon as he was born. He's fine, the doctors told us we were able to take him home. But, will this problem surface again as he grows up?

Usually these problems resolve. Ask your health care team what is the diagnosis? Michael L Spear, MD, MSEdl Faculty Advisor, Honor Board Professor of Pediatrics Drexel University College of Medicine
Lung problems in newborns predispose the lungs to other lung problems as the airways may become more susceptible to other conditions later in life, such as smoking, respiratory virus, etc. Best to avoid.
If your son was born at full term and the breathing problem is resolved now and if the physician treating him says that he is ok to go home, in all likelihood, he should do fine in future. During his pediatric follow up visits, the answers can become much more clear, particularly regarding whether breathing problem can come back.
