Constipation?

Hi, I’ve been constipated for about five days now due to opioid medications I am on. Throughout the past 24 hours, I strained really hard but could not have a bowel movement. When this happened, I noticed a lot of blood coming out of my anus. I just took some Miralax and if I still don’t have a bowel movement by tomorrow I plan on taking milk of magnesia. Is that a good idea or could it be something more serious? I didn’t eat yesterday or today, do you think I should try to eat something?

Yes, you should eat healthy food as usual. Bleeding as described is almost always hemorrhoids, but should be evaluated by a GI doctor. Use more over-the-counter laxatives or see a GI doctor for Rx laxatives.
You definitely need to get yourself cleaned out. You may want to start with an enema, then 2 bottles of magnesium citrate. I would take 1-2 doses of miralax everyday while on opioid medication. I would recommend you follow up with a GI doc.

This is best discussed with your own physician. The best course of action of course would be to discontinue the opioids. Please discuss with the physician who has been treating you.
There are many reasons that you could have seen blood during an episode of constipation. Some of the reasons include a hemorrhoid that burst or an anal fissure. However, I would seek the counsel of a physician to ensure that there’s no other underlying cause.

In regards to constipation, the most important thing is to eat 25g of fiber per day and 6-8 glasses. I would recommend taking a laxative. MiraLAX is good, but can take some time to work. Dulcolox and senna are other options, but this sometimes causes some cramping.
