Ophthalmologist Questions Pink eye

Do I have pink eye?

I've been dealing with a cold for about 5 days and today I noticed that my eyes are pink. Could this be pink eye? They are also a little itchy.

It's very possible. "Pink eye" is caused by the same virus that causes the common cold.
Yes. An upper respiratory infection can be associated with conjunctivitis. This is usually viral. You may also have a bit of an allergy. If your symptoms persist, please schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist for a complete evaluation.
It is possible. You should get an eye exam because it is a highly contagious condition.
Could be many things but mostly it sounds like an Allergic Conjunctivitis. The tip off is the itchy pink eyes. We often add the term “burning.”
This triad of Itchy, Burny, PinkEyes is common in Spring and Fall and should be considered with every case presentation with these symptoms. Another common diagnosis may be dry eye. There are others including viral and bacterial conjunctivitis.

Treatment is dependent upon the findings of the ophthalmologist.

Yes, the cold virus gets in your eye via the tear ducts.
Yes, pink eye and a cold often go together. You are potentially infectious as long as you have discharge from your eye. Don’t share towels, pillows, etc.

Not necessary! It could be allergic conjunctivitis. Get your eyes checked.
A cold can be associated with pink eye due to the spread of infection. See a doctor for advice if it gets worse.
