Dentist | Dentist Anesthesiologist Questions Articaine

Does articaine have any side effects?

During my extraction, my dentist used articaine to numb my mouth. But now, a day after the surgery, my tongue feels like it's in pain. Could this be from the articaine?

It’s not uncommon. It’s not fun, but it usually clears up. See the surgeon in about 3-5 days if it persists.

Yes. All dental anesthetics can have side effects. Post operative pain from dental injections in the tongue can happen with any dental anesthetic. Most often this is transient and will go away over time. The best course of action is to contact your treating dentist for a post op exam to evaluate the condition and discuss onset and possible causes and course of action.
Articaine is not to be used for “blocks” which means anywhere in the lower arch. You might be experiencing paresthesia (damage) to the lingual nerve from the anesthetic or surgical procedure. Contact your dentist.
