“Why are my father's gums swollen?”
My father has always taken excellent care of his teeth. Lately, his gums have been extremely swollen and cause him pain. What could be causing this?

It's possible it is an infection, but also need to see what type of medication your father is using.
The possibilities range from an inflammatory problem of his own gum tissues, through medications that could have that same affect on the gingival tissues. He should present for an examination to try to figure out the "puzzle". Too many possibilities exist to actually formulate a list. He could also be experiencing an allergic reaction to a food or drink substance.
This condition is known as gingival hyperplasia and is associated with adult diabetes and epilepsy. Another reason for the swelling that you noticed might be pathology in the form of calculus deposits beneath the gum tissue itself. Only a dentist can determine the root cause of this uncomfortable and unsightly condition by probing and measuring the depth of pockets to determine the level of inflammation and how best treat with either medication in the form of oral rinses or actual curettage of the roots in order to ameliorate the contamination the calculus causes
