I am a 40 year old female and I have knee pain. How do I know if my knee pain is serious?

If you can hardly put any weight on that leg and have a limp. You should see your doctor immediately for investigation and assessment.
Number one check for stability if it seems unstable it can be a more serious problem. Number two is imaging the distance between the femoral condyle and the tibial plateau is important in determining how much cartilage is left in the event there’s very little cartilage the problem is more serious and you should see a doctor.
