How long does anesthesia take to wear off in a child?

My 10-year-old son will have a surgery under general anesthesia. How long does it take for anesthesia to wear off in a child?

Hello,

In minutes, you can open your eyes and have reflexes. But complete recovery could take hours.
Depends on the length of surgery and the agents chosen. Most modern agents are short acting and recovery is rapid
A few hours, but can be groggy for a day or so.
It all depends if your son is healthy or has medical problems! How long the surgery? What type of surgery? Are there any complications he will end up having or not? In the best case scenario, if the child is healthy, short procedure, and no complications, usually the recovery time is around 30-60 min.
This depends on the type of anesthesia used and the general health of the child but in most cases the effects are almost completely gone by the time the patient reaches the recovery room. Medications used for sedation or pain may affect the person with nausea or simply being tired. These effects as well generally pass quickly as well

Depends on the drugs but shouldn't be more than 10-15 minutes.
Depends on the type (major vs. minor,) of surgery and and anesthetics but the child should be awake within 30 minutes after the end of surgery although he may be sleepy/sedated for a while, depending on the type of anesthetics and sedation.
That depends on the type of anesthesia, the type and length of surgery. A great question to ask your anesthetist. Probably won’t be up to speed day of surgery, but individuals do vary in recovery rates.

It all depends on the length of the procedure, the type of surgery being done and the amount of narcotic and sedative employed while under anesthesia. The longer the procedure, over an hour or so the longer for your child to awaken. Typically most children awaken in the operating room and by the time they are in the recovery room they will be able to recognize you. Your child will do fantastic. Anesthesia and surgery is very safe.
