Pediatrician Questions Polio and Post-Polio Syndrome

Until how many years should a child be given Polio vaccines?

My son is 7 years old and since he was 5 years old, we have not given him the polio drops over the past 2 years. Is this okay? He has been given the drops until he was 5 years old. What is the ideal age for children to stop taking the Polio drops?

Polio drops are live virus and not recommended any more due to only cases of polio in USA from live vaccine. Now we only give shot which is dead virus. The polio booster is at kindergarten.
I am not sure where you live, as we have not given the oral polio vaccine in the United States for some time. It is used on other continents. The usual schedule here in the United states is 2 doses of the injectable polio vaccine in the first year, one in the second year, and a fourth at entry into school.

Polio vac. series is usually completed at 4-5 yrs. of age. A booster dose is recommended if visiting a country where the polio virus is currently circulating.
