“How often should I rinse my mouth with salt water after tooth extraction?”
I am a 30 year old male and I will have a tooth extraction. How often should I rinse my mouth with salt water after tooth extraction?

You should not rinse your mouth for 24 hours after the extraction. After the first 24 hours, you should rinse many times a day... the more, the better, for 7 days
It is important not to rinse for the first 24 hours. There are some other post op instructions like no using straws to drink, no forcefull spiting after brushing, no spiting to relieve saliva build up, no carbinated beverages within the first 24 hours of having your tooth extracted. This insures the clot forms stiff enough to not be lost out of the extraction site. Patients have much less post op pain if the clot remains in place. A lost clot can cause dry socket/bone exposure, which is very painful. Try your best to follow the post op intructions given by your provider.
You should rinse with salt water after every meal starting 24 hours after the procedure. Usually for 5-7 days. Lightly swish and use a small amount of salt.
Thanks for the question.
Although salt water is okay (Grandma’s favorite remedy) it can be tricky to get the same concentration every time. Therefore I’d recommend Listerine 4-6x per day for 3-4 days post-extraction.....EXCEPT, please don’t rinse the first day as the clot could be lost and dry socket could result.

The norm is that for the first 24 hrs do not rinse with anything. After that for a week after each time you eat rinse with salt water. Do not use with regular mouth rinse for a week.
After 24 post-extraction. You should rinse with a 1 tablespoon of salt to 8 oz of water 2x/day, once in the morning and before going to bed. However, do not be rigorous. Let the water gently flow in your mouth and then let it out without spitting to avoid disturbing your blood clot.
Don't swish for the first 24 hours but after that you can rinse as much as it helps. You should so it at least twice a day until the swelling goes down and the socket heals.
You should be instructed to start rinsing with salt water the following day. I recommend to my patients that you rinse 3 to 5 times per day for 7 to 10 days.

After immediate extraction and for about a couple of days, I would suggest no rinsing and spitting, especially if there was bone grafting involved for ridge augmentation. Also because you want the blood clot to form. After that, rinsing a couple of times a day is sufficient. You could also use prefabricated sachets that are made for sinus rinse as they have both salt and bicarbonate in the pre-mixed form.
Hope this helps.
