I am a 56 year old male. I had colon surgery and haven't gone to the bathroom in days. I'm having trouble using the bathroom after surgery?

You are constipated from the narcotics. Take Vtamin D3 50,000 IU softgel weekly, and Magnesium Citrate 1,200 mg softgel daily for now.
You should drink plenty of water, walk a lot and possible take Milk of Magnesia or fiber supplements.
There should be specific discharge instructions regarding managing your bowels. If you were not given post operative instructions you need to call your surgeon today so you can be advised regarding what measures to take. If you are having issues urinating you also need to call your surgeon today for instructions. It is important that you not delay calling your doctor.
It's not uncommon to have constipation after surgery, especially if you are taking narcotics. Even if you are not taking any at home, you probably received some with anesthesia during your procedure. You should be able take any over-the-counter stool softener or laxative to help. Contact your physician for more direct instructions.
Hi! Thank you for your question. Not knowing the specifics of your case I can only generalize my response. You should be at least passing gas. That is the most important thing. If you are passing gas, then bowel movements should eventually come. Sometimes eating ice chips, hard candy (peppermint, etc.) and chewing gum can help stimulate things to move forward.
Are you taking a lot of pain meds? This can also slow down your ability to have bowel movements. Lastly, if you are not passing gas greater than 24 hours you should speak to your surgeon or be evaluated in the ED. Feel better soon.
