“Is a deep gum cleaning really necessary?”
I am a 23 year old male. I will have a deep gum cleaning. Is a deep gum cleaning really necessary?

If a proper periodontal charting has been done and you have ‘pocketing’ that is 5mm or greater with calculus below the gum line...then yes, a deep cleaning is absolutely necessary.
I would not expect that at the age of 23, a "deep gum cleaning" (root planing) would be indicated unless you have an acute periodontitis or juvenile periodontitis. "Deep cleaning" is necessary when there are periodontal pockets deeper than 4mm. Depending on one's hygiene and frequency of professional maintenance, there may be a need for a less invasive procedure with adequate hygiene training and a follow-up appointment in 4-6 weeks.
Hello,
I wish there was a good answer to your question. The professional in me knows that there are reasons for a deep cleaning. These reasons include increased gum pockets, bleeding in these gum pockets, and hardened plaque (also known as tartar or calculus) below your gum line. All of these indicate periodontal disease which will make your gums recede and eventually your teeth feel loose (this down the road, but the deep cleaning is what prevents this). If there is hardened plaque under your gums the only way to get it out is to go under there and removed (hence deep cleaning). Unfortunately, this can not be done with a tooth brush. These are all reasons why a deep cleaning may be necessary. However, the human in me knows that there are places and doctors that do not get enough money from the insurance company on a regular cleaning so they "recommend a deep cleaning." Unfortunately this happens all too much. If you are skeptical and want to avoid this, then I would suggest getting a second opinion. Most places should offer a free second opinion.
Hope this helps.
My best to you!

Yes, it is very important. If you need a "deep" gum cleaning, it may mean you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, which is a chronic systemic infection that may cause other health problems.

Dear Patient,
Your doctor will examine your gums for periodontal disease. In case of bone loss, swollen gums, deep gingival pockets or large amount of subgingival plaque and calculus, deep cleaning is recommended.
Hope this will help you.

It is important depending on your gum and bone state of health, please go and ask your dentist if you need that treatment to be done.
If a dentist or dental hygienist told you that you need deep gum cleaning, it is almost 100% certain that you do need this service if you want oral health. Avoiding a deep gum cleaning will increase the risk of:
-Bad mouth odors
-Bacteria in the blood that can infect the heart, joints, and more
-Loosening of teeth
-Loss of teeth
-Passing your contagious infection to other family members, or those close to you
A deep gum cleaning will reduce the risk of the above.

Hello,
If there are indications for a deep cleaning, it’s absolutely necessary. What are the indications? If you have a bone loss, anything more than 5 mm, accumulations of subgingival calculus (calcifies plaque deposits under the gums), or bleeding gums, you will need a deep cleaning even at this young age.
