Is a discogram painful?

My teenage son needs to have a discogram and I am nervous. I want to know if a discogram is painful?

I'm an authority on discograms. He may not need one. They are very painful.
If a disk is causing his pain, he will typically feel pain during the injection, similar to back pain (I assume this is why his doctor is ordering the test). However, if the disk is normal, there will be little pain during the injection, but he will be asked to rate his pain during the discogram procedure.
