Orthopaedic Surgeon Questions Hip arthritis

Is walking good for hip arthritis?

I am a 34 year old female and I was diagnosed with hip arthritis. I heard from my friend that walking is good for it. Is that true?

Yes moderate exercise such as walking at a normal pace is good for arthritis in general and particularly hip arthritis. You should however avoid power walking or late jogging as this will potentially increase damage to the hip joint.
It depends on the severity of the arthritis, but in general, maintaining range of motion and the strength of the muscles about the hip is good. Walking, bike riding, and swimming as well as stretching exercises are recommended. Sometimes aggressive walking such as up and down hills can be aggravating. If a walking program is started, an every other day program is recommended.

You can walk as you feel comfortable even with underlying hip arthritis. It helps you improve surrounding muscle strength and tone but if it causes more pain, then you should rest intermittently, take OTC anti-inflammatory and see and consult with local orthopedic surgeon.
Your friend is correct. Studies showed that walking does not cause progression of the hip arthritis. You need to walk to maintain your muscle strength and bone strength and prevent disuse atrophy.
