Thank you for reaching out with your question about your father's condition. Ulcerative colitis (UC) can be challenging to manage, especially when adverse reactions to medications occur. Naturopathic treatments can sometimes offer supportive strategies that may help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being. Here are some points to consider:

1. **Diet and Nutrition:** Naturopathic medicine often emphasizes the importance of diet. An anti-inflammatory diet, rich in bone broth, gelatin, and collagen; reducing starchy foods and increasing easy-to-digest simple carbs such as orange juice, fresh fruits, and stewed fruits. Specific dietary adjustments tailored to your father's needs can be beneficial.

2. **Supplements and Herbal Remedies:** Certain supplements, such as probiotics, ginger or peppermint teas, and specific herbal remedies, may help manage UC symptoms. However, it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, especially considering your father's age and medication history.

3. **Lifestyle Modifications:** Stress reduction techniques, such as pilates, stretching, and gentle exercise like walking, can be helpful. Stress is known to exacerbate UC symptoms, so finding effective ways to manage it can be crucial.

4. **Hydration:** Ensuring adequate hydration is vital, especially since UC can lead to dehydration. Encourage your father to drink plenty of water and consider electrolyte solutions if necessary.

5. **Professional Guidance:** Consulting with a naturopathic doctor (ND) who has experience with inflammatory bowel disease can provide a personalized approach. An ND can work alongside your father's current healthcare team to create a comprehensive plan.

In addition to these recommendations, I would like to offer you access to my free digestion course, "The 4 Week Digestive Jumpstart Course." This course is designed to help individuals understand their own bio-individuality and learn what dietary and lifestyle changes may work best for them. While it is not a substitute for professional medical advice, it can provide valuable insights and strategies to support digestive health. See the link below to request access.

If you decide to explore naturopathic treatments, please ensure that any new approach is discussed with your father's healthcare provider to avoid any potential interactions with his current treatments.

I have seen naturopathic medicine significantly improve the quality of life for many people with ulcerative colitis. I have treated it in many patients. However, the patient has to be willing to make some lifestyle, and usually dietary, changes .
Naturopathic medicine can be a great tool for adjunctive care to treat IBD. It's important to continue care with current gastroenterologist but adding a naturopathic doctor to take a deeper look can be very helpful. There are many resons for the IBS-D and I would love to get to the root of the issue. please call the office and schedule an appointment. Dr. Jill
I won't say "better" for him, as that'd imply that I feel ND medicine is superior to other alternative medicines or allopathic medicine; however, if he isn't tolerating pharmaceutical interventions than he'll need to try another route. ND medicine does shine in moments like these, where "other" roads and routes are needed.
We have had many successes with IBD patients using naturopathic medicine.
Yes, seek out a naturopathic doctor in your area.
Yes, I know from clinical experience that identifying the root cause of IBD is key to sustainable healing. Individualizing treatment is key.

Hi, I’m sorry to hear about your dad’s situation. I know that can be difficult. The good news is, there are many cases of IBD/IBS/UC that are successfully treated (and in some cases even reversed!) using naturopathic medicine. I highly recommend finding a licensed naturopathic doctor in your area to help him!
Naturopathic medicine is very effective in putting IBD in remission. We naturopathic doctors seek to identify and then treat the cause of health complaints. When people go into an IBD flare, they usually have something else that triggered it like an infection or toxic exposure. We test to find out what set it off, often will put the patient on an individualized anti-inflammatory diet, and replete any nutrients they are deficient in (and tell them how to obtain those nutrients in their diet). Once the trigger is addressed, the symptoms usually resolve. So far, we don't have antimicrobial resistance to our herbs, so they are a good option for treating infections, IBD,etc.
The short answer is Yes. I can help you or ND that specializes in that area.
Go to a plant based diet. All greens for 1 week. Try Goat Milk, no oats, no tomatoes to eliminate leaky gut.

I think there are many benefits to combining functional medicine approaches with conventional therapies. Functional medicine can certainly investigate more broad modalities of treatments that may be available to help with stomach/intestinal/digestive concerns. Generally, Naturopathic Doctors review all systems of the body and create support based on a holistic approach including diet, lifestyle, etc. it can be a very powerful and useful tool.
Of course, the treatments of natural origin, will help you improve your intestinal function, there are stable elements that cover the gastric mucosa and protect it while others act in the processes of deflation and repair of tissues, I put at your command
The core philosophy of naturopathic medicine is the gut. Treating the gut along with supporting the adrenal glands often promotes healing and better quality of life.
Definitely making changes in the foods he is eating and improving his digestive process will be of definite benefit to your father.

Yes, naturopathic treatment can help you father and yes it may be better for his since he has adverse reaction to his medication. I've seen pretty good results with ulcerative colitis and natural therapies. Not everyone will be cured, but if nothing more they had a decrease in the number of bowel movements per day.
Naturopathic approach to IBD can be very effective. First determine if there are any other factors contributing to your symptoms. You may have Small Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) which is an over abundance of bacteria in your small intestine causing gastrointestinal symptoms. This condition can be treated with herbs but may also require a medication called Rifaximin. SIBO is one major thing to rule out with testing. If you have SIBO you can treat IBD very effectively. If you don't have SIBO there are many Naturopathic approaches to IBD including botanical medicine, acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
Hi there,

The Naturopathic approach is based more on the cause rather than the symptoms, so although it is hard to say without seeing your father as a patient, I know that Naturopathic care has benefitted every patient in our practice.
Your father has a complex issue and it is best to stay with the doctor but need naturopathic management that target immune and the primary issue of the GUT. Once again, I stress look at digestion from the stomach, small intestine and colon., Not just the area where symptom present. You have to look at the whole body. She is a frail man and you have to be gentle. But the answer is not the doctor's steroids and anti-immune medicine. unfortunately.. Recently there are simple products of collagen and REDOX .preparation than can help if you are interested
