What are the risks of spinal fusion surgery?

I am a 37 year old female. I will have spinal fusion surgery and want to know the risks. What are the risks of spinal fusion surgery?

The risks are the same as any other major surgery - infection, blood clots, anesthesia, failure of the bone to fuse, pain, up to and including death. These risks are about 1%, so there is a 99% chance all will go fine. However, specifically to spine fusion, there is the risk that your pain may not be fully relieved. Ask your doctor carefully about this. Make sure he/she is very experienced in the procedure. If you are a smoker, DO NOT smoke for 4-6 months after the surgery to improve chances of fusion.
