“What is the best way to treat an eating disorder?”
My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with an eating disorder today. What is the best way to treat an eating disorder?

Treating eating disorders typically involves individual therapy for your daughter and Family therapy. Sometimes, medications are used. I use them frequently with the conditions that come along with the eating disorder or to assist with decreasing purging or to increase appetite.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for your question at FADT. According to most recent scientific studies, the best outcomes regarding eating disorders are coming from cases that were treated via "family based therapy". This is a type of therapy which involves the entire family, it is very intense, and focuses on the well-being of the individual as she functions in the family unit, and the family's roles and behaviors towards the individual. Generally speaking, some severe cases of eating disorder need inpatient hospitalization at an eating disorder specialized clinic to prevent cardiovascular complications. I hope this helps, thank you! Bulemia is repeated vomiting and binge eating and usually antidepressants help and therapy. Anorexia is not eating and overexercising with a distorted body image and if the weight loss is severe they may need hospitalization for refeeding. They also need psychiatry to help change the body image. This disorder is hard to treat and can lead to death.

In-patient is the best treatment, but if that is not possible, then intensive outpatient treatment. Short of all of that, find a good therapist that treats addiction. Eating disorders are an addiction.
