To change negative thought patterns. that can also b accomplished by mindful meditation. Some concentrate. on behavior change
I am not a certified practitioner of cognitive behavioral therapy, but having studied about it, I would say that the main goal is to identify thinking patterns that are harmful to the person, making the patterns clear to the person, and replacing them with more useful patterns of thought and action. Part of this is also making clear how certain feeling states (usually negative) are controlled by thought patterns.
