When should you see a doctor for elbow pain?

I am a 17 year old male with elbow pain from football. When should you see a doctor for elbow pain?

When it won't go away naturally in a couple of weeks
If problem is persistent and limits activity
If it doesn’t get better after a few weeks or if you have a limited range of motion.
Any persistent pain that does not go away or get significantly better with rest and Advil 3 tabs, 3 times a day.

Hope it helps!

Persistent pain warrants a doctor visit.

If the elbow limits your function and is not helped with anti-inflammatories, rest or ice. Usually give it a few days to a week. If it’s still painful and limiting then see a doctor.
Pain which lasts for more than 3 days, limits motion, and is associated with noticeable swelling or deformity. An athletic trainer could probably check it out at school and provide recommendations for treatment or evaluation.

Good luck,

Thanks for your question. In my opinion, the following are the situations where you need to see your doctor immediately:

1. Traumatic injury
2. Pain associated with swelling and fever
3. Non-traumatic pain of more than 3 weeks
4. Pain not getting better and progressively getting worse.
5. Pain worsening with simple daily activities

Thanks.
Start by talking to your athletic trainer at your school. If you have elbow pain that continues despite rest, ice, Advil, you should see a doctor who specializes in sports medicine.
