I am a 27 year old male. My ankle feels like it needs to pop but won't. What could be the cause?

There could be a number of issues. It could be weakness in the ligaments or improper joint motion. Your should get it checked by a health care professional before things get worse.
It could be an unbalance of the stabilization of the joint with many causes. Will have to be evaluated.
I'll bet your ankle is stiff in dorsiflexion and/or in plantarflexion. A professional eye is better then an untrained eye. Go see your local health professional!
It is possible that your ankle is misaligned and there is inflammation creating spasm not allowing it to align
The question is what happened when you felt your ankle change and need help? Was it during a special activity, just resting, was it "twisted," did you step onto something that you did not see? Have you changed activities? Questions like this come from a Doctor of Chiropractic (although not all chiropractors work with anything beyond the spine so you will have to call offices and ask) in seeking information and this is followed by an complete exam.Your ankle problem may be from a different part of your body and your ankle is just a remote symptom.
Most likely you had an old injury to the ankle. Needs to be properly stretched and rehab before it will release on its own.
Hello,
Ankle issues vary greatly because if you are athletic it could be as simple as it is misaligned and needs to be adjusted. Secondly, you could have a tibia or fibula (knee region) issue that is causing greater strain in the ligaments of the ankle. Lastly, believe it or not, cranial or upper cervical issues can cause ankles to be unstable. Unfortunately, without doing the tests, it's hard to pinpoint, however, there is 3 possible scenarios. There are definitely more but those are the most common.

That sounds uncomfortable. Maybe try the alphabet exercise; with your foot in the air start doing stretching with your toes as if you are drawing all the letters of the alphabet, this will give you some relief. Otherwise I suggest to go see your local chiropractor for an adjustment
Do not pop your ankle and any other joint on purpose! Have you had a proper examination? I can't tell what is wrong and what needs to be done without a proper hands on examination. The questions that I would ask are: 1. Have you injured the ankle? 2. What sports have you played? 3. Have you turned the ankle? Did you have any fall as a child? Other questions would come up during an examination.
This could be that the joints of the ankle or foot are out of alignment. This can also be the result of tight muscles in the calves.
