Why does my neck crunch when I roll my head?

I am a 39 year old male. My neck crunches when I roll my head. What could be the cause?

Don't do it. It grinds the joints. Pure flexion and Extn.
There are a couple different reasons your neck may crunch when you roll it. If you are hearing noises that sound like when you crack your knuckles that is just air bubbles releasing in the joint. If your crunchy neck sounds more like rice krispies that is more likely the uneven surfaces of your bones (vertebrae) that are rubbing on each other. This would mean you have some degeneration and potential arthritis in your neck.
It's called crepitus. When you move a joint that has healed from previous trauma. It could also could be pressure created by air bubbles trapped in the joint. When you move, it's released and you hear a "cracking sound."
Hi there, there could be several reasons why your neck cracks, or what it’s called crepitus when you roll your neck. At your age the most common reason would be spinal vertebra having excessive motion because they are compensating for other(s) where the joints are locked up which is part of a subluxation. The body is always trying to heal itself so other vertebra will take up the slack to compensate.Another reason could be arthritic change. I would highly recommend that you consult with the doctor of chiropractic.
There could be many different causes for this. I would need to ask you questions and do an exam to really answer your question. It could be that you need nutritional support for the ligaments and joints in your neck, or you may need some therapy to strengthen and stabilize your neck. Either way, you should go see your chiropractor and make sure your chiropractor takes a good history and does a comprehensive exam.
