Dentist Questions tooth pain

Why does my tooth pain come and go?

I'm 19, and I've had a toothache already for 1 month and it basically just comes and goes. I'm not in severe pain though. I can describe it as a dull and achy. What's causing my tooth pain to come and go?

It could be a few different causes. Possibly a small cavity, exposed root surface or a sinus related issue. Hard to tell without an exam and probably an xray.
There can be many reasons for tooth pain, but typically pain is nature's way of telling us that something is wrong. My experience dealing with tooth pain for over 40 years is that if it isn't treated in the early stages, the problem usually grows into something more complex and costly to resolve. I would highly suggest that you visit a dentist and get to the root of the problem.

A lot of things…for instance, it could be caused by gum recession or periodontal disease, it could be a cavity that has not quite decayed down to the root, it could be sinus pressure referring the pain to your tooth. So, without X-rays and a dental exam, there is no way of telling what it is. Go see your dentist before it becomes extremely painful all the time.
Good luck.

There are lots of different reasons a tooth can hurt. If the pain is spontaneous (not eating or drinking anything cold to cause the pain) and lasts for longer than a minute or two, there could be a cavity working its way into the tooth and irritating the nerve. Sometimes the nerve will pull back, but as the cavity gets deeper the pain becomes more intense, more frequent, or both. If you wait until the pain is all the time, you will end up with a root canal or possibly losing the tooth. I would recommend getting in to see a dentist, get an X-ray to see what is going on. Hopefully it will just need a filling.

It sounds like you have a cavity that has progressed to the nerve of the tooth. The treatment for that is root canal or extraction. You should go see a dentist. If you let it go too long the only option will be extraction and sometimes it can cause a spreading infection.
