  • What causes yellowing teeth?

Smoking plays a big roll in staining. Coffee drinking can cause this type of stain as well. Your best bet would be to visit a local dentis in your area for a cleaning and to discuss whitening options at this time. READ MORE

  • I had my wisdom tooth removed yesterday. When can I start eating solid food again?

You can start eating solid food as soon as you feel comfortable with it. You will just want to avoid getting food into the socket directly and avoid biting or chewing on your lip, cheek, or tongue if it is still feeling numb. READ MORE

  • My molars are hurting. I already had my wisdom teeth all taken out. What can this be?

This could be due to gingivitis or periodontal disease. This could also be due to a cavity in the area of the molars. A third option is if the gums grow over the back of the molars you can bite on them and this leads to an infection. Clinical examination is required for appropriate diagnosis and recommended treatment. READ MORE

  • How effective are sensitivity toothpastes in treating the problem?

Often times these work well. It depends on the cause of your sensitivity and the severity of the sensitivity as to what works best. The best results that I have noted are from daily use of Act restoring mouthrinse and use of a fluoridated toothpaste with potassium nitrate. READ MORE

  • I am still having pain after my wisdom tooth extraction last week. Why is this happening?

Usually the pain takes 3 days to begin to subside and can last for several weeks. If the pain has not decreased at all it is sign of infection or dry socket. At this point it is best if you schedule an appointment wit the treating doctor for examination and treatment as needed. READ MORE

Everybody develops at a different pace. This is not abnormal and I do not believe there to be anything to worry about at this time. READ MORE

  • Are there any home remedies to treat bleeding gums?

Proper technique for brushing and flossing is key. I would have him discuss technique with his hygienist and have them show him proper technique. Something that may help is use of a Waterpik in addition to flossing. Here, as well, technique is very important. READ MORE

  • Does brushing with salt help remove yellow stains from the teeth?

Brushing with salt is abrasive and can lead to removal of stain however this is a bad means for treatment of this. Brushing with salt can lead to further injury and harm. Dental cleanings and whitening toothpastes can aid in returning your teeth to their original shade. READ MORE

  • Are cavities possible in baby teeth?

This is possible and quite common. Treatment depends on the size of the cavity but it is treated through fillings, pulpotomy with stainless steel crowns, extraction and space maintenance. To prevent this it is important to maintain appropriate oral hygiene and recall care with your child at their respective dentist. READ MORE

This is true. This is the same means as red wine staining and coffee staining. Normal recall cleanings can limit staining, however, the only way for absolute prevention is through cessation of consumption. READ MORE

  • Are OTC products recommended for teeth whitening?

Many of these OTC products claim to whiten, however, they whiten very slowly. OTC products are based off of abrasiveness to remove stain and non prescription strength whitening chemicals which take more time for a noticible result. I have no vested interest in the company, however, there is a product that is OTC known as Opalesence Go which I have seen many amazing results from. It is what I recommend to my patients who are not looking for immediate results. READ MORE

  • What is the course of treatment for periodontitis?

Periodontitis is treated in two different ways depending on severity. Scaling and root plainkng is for less severe cases in which the patient is anesthitized to allow for appropriate cleaning. 6-8 weeks following treatment a re-evaluation should be completed to insure the patient is maintaining their oral hygiene and no areas of concern remain present. More severe cases require a surgical scaling and root plaining in which the gums need to be reflected back to allow access for the cleaning. This should be completed by a specialist. Certain laser treatments can be provided by appropriately trained individuals as well. Once dignoswd with periodontitis the patient is always a periodontal patient. The disease is never gone however arrested. Constant follow up is required to maintain teeth as long as possible. READ MORE

  • I had a root canal and the same tooth is hurting again. What should I do?

There are many things that can be going on here. Number one is the restoration placed following the root canal may be too high. This can lead to a hot cold sensitivity and sensation of a tooth pain due to an inflamed ligament. Number two would be a missed lateral canal or recurrent infection. Number three would be a fractured root. Number four would be referred pain from another tooth. Number five would be sinus pressure if your sinuses are clogged up and it was an upper tooth. • What causes swelling in the gums?

This can be caused by many different things. Trauma can be a cause of this, for instance a sharp pike from a tooth pick, aggressively brushing, or cutting the gums with a sharp chip or piece of bread. A cavity underneath the gums on the tooth can harbor bacteria which will cause the gums to be edematous and inflamed in this area. Periodontal disease and gingivitis can always to swelling as well. There are also certain viruses and certain individuals who are pregnant may have swelling in their gingiva. When I’m doubt, I would visit your dentist for further evaluation. READ MORE

  • What is the medication that the dentist will use as an anesthesia before my root canal?

Several different medications can be used for anesthesia. The most common brands used are Lidocaine or Septocaine. Lidocaine and Septocaine are used with epinephrine to prolong the effect of the anesthesia. Carbocaine is another anesthetic commonly used that does not contain epinephrine, which decreases the time of which the anesthetic will have its effect. Lastly, depending on the situation, nitrous oxide sedation may be used. All of these depend on the severity of the infection, the location of the tooth, and the patients health history. If the medicine does not suit you the most likely complications are anxiety attacks and possible heart palpitations. However, heart palpitations are unlikely. READ MORE

  • I underwent a root canal treatment and it is in pain again. What could be the reason?

There are several possible reasons for your pain. Reason one would be if the root canal was completed and definitive treatment was not completed by a dentist. This can lead to reinfection of the area or root fracture which may both cause pain. Reason two would be if the tooth has a lateral canal that was missed and not filled. This could cause pain as well. If it was completed and the crown and/or buildup placed has the wrong occlusion this can lead to inflammation of the ligament holding the tooth into the socket. This can lead to pain as well. Referred pain from a different tooth is another option which can cause pain. READ MORE

  • How can I reverse yellowing of my teeth?

There are many ways to reverse the staining on your teeth. The first thing that you would need to do is establish the cause. Teeth can yellow due to various reasons such as, but not limited to: thinning of enamel, coffee drinking, tea drinking, smoking, erosion, and attrition. Some of these would require restorative treatment of some kind to whiten the test. Some require just a cleaning. There is also the option of whitening teeth as well.
