Cyril Tahtadjian's Expert Contributions
Why are my dentures not setting right?
Dentures often need adjustments after they are delivered to you. It is best to go to whoever made them and have them adjusted so they fit better. READ MORE
How often should a 7-year-old go to the dentist?
Another important point is that cavities grow more rapidly in baby teeth, so detecting them earlier makes for an easier fix. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What could be the reason for my jaw stiffness?
Jaw stiffness is often caused by grinding, which itself has no cure to eliminate. However, a nightguard appliance can often help alleviate the pain and severity of the problem. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
For small kids how frequent should dentist visits be?
Ideally every 6 months. This allows monitoring of the tooth and jaw development and allows detecting cavities if they begin sooner as cavities grow very rapidly in children. It also trains a healthier routine for the child. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
I had pulpectomy on my lower left tooth. It still hurts. What should I do?
A pulpectomy is only the start of a root canal procedure by removing the root tissue only. It is intended to alleviate pressure buildup in the tooth and hence reduce pain. If pain is worsening, it could indicate that there is still nerve tissue remaining, or that the infection is severe enough that your body’s immune system is unable to fight it. Contact your dentist right away and he may prescribe you an antibiotic to help the situation. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
#2 tooth with deep cavity - why infected after filling?
This is not an unusual situation, and many teeth with large cavities go through a similar path. Although the pain is gone, it may return, and the tooth nerve may possibly be dead too. Only way to confirm is with vitality testing. A root canal is rarely done preventively, usually reactively to pain. Tooth #2 is an important tooth for chewing, so I would not give up on it so easily. Many deep cavities can lead to further infections, and it is impossible to prevent entirely. It’s like saying “I want to drive a car, but I don’t ever want to get into an accident”. Some things are simply inevitable. However, good oral hygiene and regular professional care improves your odds, just like driving safely. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
How long would It ideally take to get teeth aligned with the help of braces?
The timeline for braces is impossible to predict without seeing the patient. Factors that affect it are the severity of crowding/spacing, the type of appliance being used, the child’s age, and the compliance. Wish I could give you a less vague answer. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Are OTC products recommended for teeth whitening?
Although many OTC whitening products contain the active ingredient for whitening, hydrogen peroxide, they are often not high enough in concentration to make an appreciable difference. I never recommend against them, as they do not harm. I merely caution patients to have a realistic level of expectation. If it is not potent enough to achieve the desired results, my patients visit me for a professional version which gives far superior results. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
I had a root canal and the same tooth is hurting again. What should I do?
It is not typical to get recurring pain in a tooth 3 months after a root canal procedure. I would suggest go back to whomever that did the procedure for re-evaluation. The root canal could be incomplete or have a missed canal. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Can cavities in one tooth affect other teeth as well?
The short answer is both. Cavities are very contagious and spread to adjacent teeth and even to another person’s mouth. As well, if the filled tooth is sensitive, it could refer to adjacent teeth. It should be professionally evaluated. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What is the right age for kids to brush their teeth on their own?
It very much depends on each child, and how quickly they develop the right skill set for brushing. In my practice, I see children develop that closer to age 5-6. I would be cautious about expecting a 3 year old to properly brush on her own. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Is oil pulling ever recommended by dentists?
Oil pulling has become very popular nowadays. Although it causes no harm, its actual clinical benefit is still not scientifically documented or universally accepted. However, many people “feel” an improvement with using it, so I neither recommend for or against it. It is the patient’s choice. Good luck, Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What is the treatment for dry mouth?
Dry mouth can be caused due to age, a side effect of certain medications, or due to an underlying systemic medical condition. It should be professionally evaluated to identify the cause before trying to treat it, otherwise the treatment may be ineffective. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What is the earliest age someone can get braces?
Depending on the severity of the crowding and the development level of the child, orthodontic treatment may be initiated as early as age 7. Braces specifically however, will likely be placed at a later age, toward the end of the treatment. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
I had three of my crooked teeth extracted and they won't stop bleeding. What should I do?
I can only hope that by the time you are reading this response, your bleeding has finally stopped. Whenever bleeding is not controlled within 1-2 hours, you should seek out emergency care either with a dentist or hospital as the blood loss can become a critical concern. Definitely heavy rinsing can be a perpetuating factor. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
